When you first hear the words “your child has autism,” it can feel like your world has been turned upside down. You walk into a room, receive a diagnosis, and walk out. Suddenly, everything is different. You may feel worried, scared, sad, angry, and overwhelmed. You’re left to figure it all out, yet have no idea where to begin.
You attend Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings that can leave you feeling incredibly vulnerable. You quickly learn the system is filled with a lot of red tape and that you are going to have to fight like hell to break through that red tape. Every day becomes a fight, as you serve as your child’s voice and advocate, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive in this world. Along the way, you learn it’s not the big things, it’s the little things that matter and that your child is exactly who they are supposed to be.
Antonio is the happiest boy we know. He has taught us the value of different perspectives, the joy found in silence, and laughter that appears in the most unexpected moments. We dream of a future where Autism Spectrum differences are not only accepted, but appreciated — across social, educational, and professional communities. We dream of a world where our friends with autism can thrive without judgment or fear, surrounded by love, understanding, and accommodation.
Please consider supporting our fundraising efforts as we take part in the Autism Challenge to raise funds and advocate for our children.
